Oh What A Night!

So tonight I headed off down to Hereford to run both the Shark and Chunk.  It was an ideal time as there was just over a week until the Hereford National.

It started off well, got there that early I decided to try to build a Shark with a small chassis but decided after taking the front end off to put it back, no stress tonight!

Then it went from bad to worse, 3 laps into practise the car had no drive and after investigation I found out the that Prop Shaft had snapped in two pieces, something I have never encountered before!!  so Round 1 was missed.  I changed the shaft in double quick time by moving the electrics into a spare Shark I had just bought from Stu Mac, thanks matey.

Got the car on the line (just about) for Round 2 only to strip the spur before the race even started!  So 2 hours drive and 3 laps so far!!  During Round 2 I threw Chunk on the track only to fall off the big jump on my second lap and rip a turnbuckle out of its socket!!

I changed the spur gear in the Shark and the meshing didn't feel comfortable so in double quick time (again) I threw in my Speed Passion 6900kv motor which I had set up on a spare motor place.  I finished 3rd in the race behind Bish and Craig Harris but most importantly I managed the quickest lap of the race!!

The final came along and I despite missing the warble at the start I drove to a creditable 2nd place although about half a lap behind Bish.  According to the computer however I won so I can't argue with that, oh, I also had the fastest lap!

So a long evening and little reward.  Plenty of rebuilding to do before my next outing in err... 2 days!

The night finished off with a wobbly (buckled) wheel, we will be getting rid of that me thinks!!

Thanks to Hereford for their hospitality as always and I'm really looking forward to Morgan Rham making his top heat debut at the Micro National, he looked in stunning form tonight

Racing tonight!

I'm so excited by the prospect of racing tonight at Ellesmere Port. I'll have another relaxed evening, not going to change anything and just go with the flow!

It'll also be my first opportunity to try my Chunk! I've still got to change Shock Oil, Shock Springs and get some Mini Pins on it but then I'll be ready to go!

I've transferred my Emax motor to Chunk already and that'll be geared on 24/77 to start with (need to put Pinion on!). So I've gone back to a Speed Passion motor in the Shark, be interesting to see exactly how much more aggressive it is!

So a bit of work to still do, but can't wait!

Spares Obtained!!

With no names mentioned I now have just about enough bits to build 2 full LWB Sharks!

I've also agreed to buy a 3rd Shark which I should be picking up from the Hereford National at the start of March!

Why??

Well the answer is simple! I bloody love the LRP Shark and despite the attention from the CML Carisma the Shark is currently still the car to beat. That may of course change by the time we get to next season but as it stands I'm stock piling spares!

You never know just exactly what you'll break!

Race Day - Ellesmere Port 11.02.11

After finishing the rebuild I have brought the car to Ellesmere Port and I'm hoping for a stress free night. No breakages, no hassles, just a chilled nights racing!

Then I saw the track and checked that there 9 in the heat! It could be a long night!

Round 1
Despite the carnage this was a routine race and comfortable win, the night starts off as I want!

Round 2
Spoke well too soon!! Started off really well again but then disaster as my wheel came loose so I had a 2 lap pit stop! Fastest lap though

Round 3
Another fairly clean and quick race for me, plus keeping out of the way of carnage helped me to a win with a new FTD.

I remembered as well tonight that I took the front roll bar off the other week, I would like to try it but I can't be bothered. Looking forward to Chinese and Beer when I get in!

Final
A relaxing end to a relaxing night! An early error allowed Dan and Gav through. Gav rolled straight away and then Dan came together with a back marker which allowed me to a lap and a half win, more importantly it was the fastest lap that counted!!

A relaxing night with little issues!

It was good to see young Morgan Rham running the Tony Bishop Long Wheel Base Shark, it will take some getting used to for him especially as he was using someone elses transmitter too but he was looking good on the track!

Shark Rebuild

24 hours after my Shark decided to fall to pieces at Mold it is time to start the rebuild. I've got 48 hours to get it sorted ready for the next Ellesmere Port Club Night. This rebuild is needs to be a no holds barred, everything off the car, strip down and clean. All the bearings (I'm sure there's 15) will get a nice soak in good old fashioned motor cleaner and I may even have a re-arrange of the pit box!

It's also going to give me a chance to run a stock take on what I have and what is needed!! There may be an order imminent!

Before
This is what I was faced with at the start

During
Well during the rebuild I was looking for anything broken or damaged etc... I'd already decided to change the servo although I noticed the steering was very odd. The actual steering post that attaches to the chassis wasn't allowing the steering to be moved freely from side to side once the Servo had been unattached. Based on this I may try the Servo again just to see

Here's the reason that the hinge pin fell out last night at Mold, notice the difference??

I've also got rid of one of the bearings in the front wheel hub as that had started to fall apart, again potential issue that may not have been the Servo.

The rear upper diff housing is being replaced as well as the screws through the shock tower into it were not doing their job, I will be applying a small bit of thread lock to certain areas / screws.

What Goes Where??
Any ideas!! 20 minutes after starting this is the stage we are at

So we start the jigsaw puzzle that is putting things back together. With the Shark always start with the Prop Shaft, Diffs and Diff Housings and you should have something that looks like the below

Race Day - Mold Model Car Club - 08.02.11

Fresh after victory on Sunday at Swansea I've come along once more to Broughton, home of Mold Model Car Club. There'll probably not be many of us there but we're enthusiastic and lay a good track!

I was hoping for a nice easy evening, not change anything on the car, possibly even run a stock take on my things!!

How wrong could I be!! I go to turn on the transmitter and found out that it had been left on after Sunday a quick trip to Tesco around the corner and away we go!

After a few laps my front left wheel fell off! After closer inspection I was surprised to see this

The driveshaft has sheared off! After taking one of Mikes car this is what it's meant to look like

There are only 4 of us here though unfortunately so I'm not sure we'll plug the laptop in or not!

I have noticed with the car that I have so much more steering to the right than the left so at some point this week I need to resort the Servo, the end points are suggesting all should be ok

The End
Well by the end of the night one of the rear hingepins had fallen out as it appears the rear brace has snapped in half! The servo also appears to be knackered as the car is pulling to the right. The front end is really loose as well!! All in all the car needs a complete rebuild so I hope I get time to do it before Friday!!

4wd Race Day - Swansea Micro National - 06.02.11

As opposed to Caldicot I've decided to take some good advice and not change the car!! Shocks will be topped up before the National for good prep, a new fan will be on the motor and we're good to go.

The only change from the previous nationals is I'm going to start with the new Emax Motor, after recent runnings I've decided to drop it down to a 15 pinion, we'll see how it feels in Practice

Round 1
TQ for me! Not sure how, not sure why and don't really care!! A couple of errors but generally a clean run. Went down one tooth pinion to 15/49.

Round 2
Another TQ, 3 seconds quicker than my previous time. There is an 18 lapper in this!!

Round 3
This round was a fairly scrappy one and I ended up 2nd place. Based on the rules we keep that is good enough to see me pole today in 4wd!!

Round 4
Another fairly scrappy race from my point of view. A crash on the first corner (as I did in round 3) allowed Chris Bottle, Tony Bishop and Phil Sleigh through. After several more errors I manages to work my way back up ahead of all bit Bishop beat me on the stagger, 3rd in the round for me.

I had a scare pre race as a wire had come off my fan so I ended up putting holes in the body shell, the idea being to get the airflow through the car. I was starting to worry that there were to many similarities to the previous years Swansea effort!

Final
So the pressure is on to try and pick up my first National win. It was my first 4th Micro National TQ in my 9 Nationals and I needed to convert one if only for my relief!!

The first view laps went off without a hitch, I was cautious and managed to hold the field off. Myself, Harris, Sleigh and Bishop pulled away from the rest of the field with very little separating us. After this I managed to pull away a small gap on the field before getting tangled with a crashed back marker. That allowed Craig to pull alongside me coming down the wall ramp and we had a coming together which resulted in Craig landing upside down.

As a result I was able to continue to hold a gap ahead of Sleigh and Bishop. Keith Robertson was commentating and as he announced 80 seconds to go I probably eased off too much and Sleigh managed to close the gap right down. Fortunately for me we both crossed the line without getting through for the 18 laps which resulted in my first ever National win. If we'd got through for the lap then Phil may have ended up getting past!

Bish came in 3rd for a fantastic Carisma debut from him and Craig finished 4th. Todays result keeps me the Championship hunt - just - although more importantly strengthens my grip on the more realistic 2nd place overall!

2wd Race Day - Swansea Micro National - 06.02.11

So the excitement and the talk is finally over and myself and 8 other drivers will line up in the 1/16th 2wd class and all racing the same car, Phat Bodies Chunk! I believe I have the advantage though as I have Dans car and it's uber quick!!

Practice and Round 1
Good start all in all. Practice was a bit sketchy but the car felt ok. I've decided to run Mini-Pins, they are the only tyre to use here in my opinion.

I had a slow start to round 1, started off last and came together with a few back markers. By the end of the race I was in a very comfortable 2nd and finished 10 seconds behind Danny Conway. In terms of the car there's not really slot I can do about it, don't get me wrong it's going superbly well, I just need to get used it to!!

Round 2
Very very very very piss poor marshalling cost me dearly! I wouldn't have minded if I'd made the mistake but I was hit in the build up! Craig Harris took the round with Danny in 2nd and me third. I get the feeling that's where it will all end today although I am putting done good laps in with Chunk, just making a few to many errors!

Round 3
An amazing run which saw me dominate the race but transponder issues mean I only got 3 laps counted! As there was no start and finish time nothing can be done so my chance of TQ goes with it. Craig takes the race from Danny

Round 4
Going into this race I'm sitting 3rd with the added knowledge of how well it went last race! Bring it on!

I very good 2nd place finish has cemented my position as 3rd on the grid. It would appear that we'll have to put the last race PT issues down to possibly a loose connection or the PT not plugged in properly.

Anyways, Harris is starting to look good in 2wd and he'll take some stopping, myself and Conway will hopefully do that!

Final
As predicted Craig got a clean start and managed to open up a 4 second lead from myself and Danny. I managed to pressure Danny into a mistake but after 3 laps it was too late. Craig had pulled away and gone

I managed to hold off Danny for a few laps and then it was plain sailing into a comfortable 2nd position.

Overall I'm delighted with how the Chunk has gone today and 2nd place is a fair result. If Cris Oxley runs his at the next National then we may find ourselves with 2 heats!

What Final To Aim At...?

One question I've often asked by newbies to the hobby is what final should they be aiming for. My main advice is simple, "Don't pressure yourself with targets, if you drive as cleanly as you can then take satisfaction from which ever final you make".

I should sometimes take my own advice! It's slightly different to an experienced driver though, take me for example, I'm expected to make the Top 10 at the Mid West Outdoor Regionals and although it's fair to say if I miss out on a Top 10 then I'd be very disappointed, it's whereabouts do you aim for overall when you find yourself in this position?

It's very easy to feel down if you look at a heat list and see Former European A Finalists, World Champions, Regional winners etc..., just remember each event is a new event.

To those more experienced drivers who are hopeful of making A Finals, my primary advice is also simple, make sure you get in there first and then push for the highest grid position you can, after all you can't win it if you're not in it!

The most important thing to remember though is that for 99% of the RC Universe this is a hobby, ok a very expensive hobby, enjoy it and come back next time with the last meeting put behind you and a smile on your face, drive cleanly and qualify as high as possible!

Pre-Micro National Thoughts

So onwards to Swansea for Round 5 of the series and I get the feeling it's not going to be straight forward!!

This time last year it was only my 2nd Micro National and it was certainly one to remember. After being placed in Heat 1 as an 'unranked' driver (although I did race at the previous Round there was nothing updated) I managed to take Rounds 1 & 2 which ended up being good enough to take overall TQ. I managed a superbly clean driver for 3 and a half minutes before my motor decided to blow and with it any chance of picking up my first National win!

This year it's all different though and I am racing 2 classes, one of them for the first time. I will be lining up with the 1/16th 4wd as normal as I continue my push for the Top 3. It's fair to say Craig Harris is probably not going to be caught in this but there is a right battle heating up for 2nd place involving myself, Phil Sleigh, Danny Conway and Tony Bishop.

I'm also lining up in 1/16th 2wd for the first time. I am racing the Phat Bodies Chunk of Dan Osbornes, fortunately for me Dan is away on holiday so they have been kind enough to allow me to run his car and as I have blogged so far I am very impressed. I am that impressed I've actually agreed to buy one and should complete the transaction at Swansea , ready for the rest of the season.

I'll also be having a chat with Cain in relation to future projects with RC Model Imports. We have tried to get the Blaze up and running in the 1/18th 4wd Class but so far this has been unsuccessful, I still think it's a possibility and we will have to wait and see what we can do!

I'll be trying to update the blog after every round but with time constraints at Swansea it may not be possible!!

Race Day - Ellesmere Port Club Night 04.02.11

At this weeks club night I will alternate between both the Chunk and the Shark.  I am doing this for a couple of reasons.  Firstly I need practice with the Chunk ready for Swansea but secondly and most importantly it's going to be touch alternating from 2wd to 4wd on Sunday so I may as well try it!

I have experience in moving between one class to the next when racing Indoors 1/10th so I know the difficulties that this will have, with 2wd, especially on slippy conditions, you have to be very gentle on the throttle, whereas 4wd you can power round.  I think 2wd suits me more with this although if I need to get some quick clean laps in then I may over push on the throttle.  At least with 4wd I can only drive to easy but then I'd fall into the bracket of Tony Bishop and the consistent (slow) laps ;-) (Only joking Tony)

I'm planning to start with Chunk in Practice and Round 1 and then move on to the Shark and so on.  I'll only change this depending on breakages, batteries, etc....Basically go with the flow and decide on the night!!

Watch this space....!

Race Day - Mold Model Car Club Night - 01.02.10

Not got much chat from the meeting tonight to be honest, I raced both my usual Shark and the Chunk and was busy, busy, busy!

Starting with the Shark......  I tried my new Emax 4950kv motor today geared at 16/49 and the car came off very cool after 5 minutes (well cooler than normal), I was that impressed with it I think I may start with the motor on Sunday at Swansea.  Overall I lost the final to Tony Bishop due to an error and then no marshalling!  Overall though Bish and I were very close overall, and there was nothing in our fastest laps, Bish was also driving his new Carisma

Now on to the attraction of the night the Chunk!  On the slippy sections the car wanted to spin donuts and it took alot of throttle control to keep the car pointing in the right direction!  I got more and more used to the car as the day went on and in the end I managed to lap within 1.2 seconds of my best Shark times!  Around the Broughton track tonight that would have only have been around a lap slower, amazing!

Bring on Sunday!!
